Army Reserve competes in 2010 Army Best Warrior Competition

I photographed two Army Reserve Soldiers competing in the 2010 Department of the Army Best Warrior Competition at Fort Lee, Va.

The Best Warrior competition pits 24 of the Army’s finest (12 NCOs and 12 junior enlisted Soldiers) from the major commands to determine the top NCO and Soldier of the Year for the entire U.S. Army.

Monday, Oct. 18 was the first day of competition. While not the most physically intense phase of the week-long competition, it is probably the most mentally challenging.

Each Warrior must face a panel comprised of Command Sgts. Majors who ask a battery of questions as it relates to Army history, regulations, policies and current events.

The Army Reserve Warriors are Sgt. David Rider and Spc. Joshua McDowell. Each Warrior is granted a ‘sponsor’ to help train and mentor them prior to the competition. For the first time in the nine year history of the competition a husband and wife are team together as Warrior and sponsor. Sgt. Rider is the NCO competitor accompanied by his wife, Sgt. Alicia Rider.

The winners were announced on Monday, Oct. 25 at a ceremony inWashington, D.C. While Rider nor McDowell claimed the top prize, they represented the Army Reserve in fine Army Strong fashion!
