2012 U.S. Olympic Trials – Table Tennis
CARY, N.C. – I photographed the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials – Table Tennis Feb. 12, 2012 for ZUMA Press.
I must admit I was somewhat surprised the event would even be held there, but, after speaking with organizers, it all came together.
As a matter of fact, the North American qualifier between the U.S. and Canada will be held in Cary in April.
But was even more surprising was the speed of play. These men and women really can hammer a table tennis ball at remarkable speeds.

Getting back to basics
FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Simulated casualties, suffering from various wounds, lay scattered across the floor as a squad of Soldiers quickly moved in.
As the squad set out to evaluate and treat each casualty, a Soldier wandered into the middle of the room and collapsed, screaming and writhing in pain with massive amounts of blood spurting from his right forearm.
It took a brief moment, but two non-commissioned officers rushed to his aid to control the bleeding.
Resolutions for Photographers

Army-Navy 2011
The 112th Army-Navy game happened for the first time in the Washington, D.C. area Saturday, Dec. 10 at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
While the Navy Midshipmen won their 10th straight game against the Army Black Knights, the final score of 27-21 was one of the closest in recent memory.
All I Want for Christmas …

Own the night
This tip sheet was primarily written for military photojournalists but it applies to anyone who wants to nail some really great night shots that have people in them – without using a flash.
In Memoriam: Dan Wheldon, 1987-2011
Below are a few images I found in my archives of Dan Wheldon. They were taken from 2004-2007 at Richmond International Raceway when they used to run the Indy Racing League’s SunTrust Indy Challenge.
Rest in peace Dan.
Photoshop Layers Adjustment Panel
This tip sheet was primarily written for military photojournalists but it applies to anyone who doesn’t quite understand one of the most powerful tools in Photoshop – the Layers Adjustment Panel.
2011 Eastern Zone Polocrosse Championships
On the field action from the 2011 Eastern Zone Championship of the American Polocrosse Association at Pinehurst, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011. Polocrosse, founded in Australia in the mid-1940′s, is a combination of polo and lacrosse. Twenty-eight teams and 126 players from Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee competed at this year’s championship event.
This is the first time I’ve ever covered an event like this. A great combination of polo and lacrosse. It was a fun event to cover and definitely included family members competing together.
102 Minutes: Remembering Ground Zero 10 years later
On Aug. 20, 2011, I had the opportunity to travel to New York City and interview three Army Reserve Soldiers who shared their experiences of 9/11 with me for the Army Reserve Warrior-Citizen magazine.
They recounted painful details from that day, their experiences deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan and how 9/11 has changed their lives 10 years later.
It was an honor to interview them and share their stories with you.
Understanding Color Balance & Temperature
This tip sheet was primarily written for military photojournalists but it applies to anyone who has problems with their color balance selections. Here’s a few tips and tricks to hopefully help you out.
National Airborne Day
Saturday, August 13 was celebrated as National Airborne Day. National Airborne Day was held at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, Fayetteville, N.C. I photographed the event for my freelance agency ZUMA Press.
This year’s annual event commemorates the 71st anniversary of the Army Parachute Test Platoon’s first official jump and the tenth anniversary of the museum.
In 2002, President George W. Bush signed a proclamation slating August 16th as National Airborne Day in honor of “the first official Army parachute jump on August 16, 1940.”
Improving conference photography
This tip sheet was primarily written for military photojournalists but it applies to anyone who has or will have to photograph a conference of some kind. Those of us in the military photojournalism field do our fair share of covering events like these so I thought I would share with you how I approach assignments like this.

Proud to be recognized by Nikon Professional Services
After searching for a sponsor, submitting a portfolio for review, filling out additional paperwork and waiting for nearly six months, I received what I had been waiting for – my Nikon Professional Services membership arrived in the mail.
It is indeed an honor to be recognized by a company whose professional photographic equipment I use in my daily job with the U.S. Army Reserve and in my freelance photojournalism career.
Building relationships one patient at a time
HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – For hundreds of years, life along the Mississippi River has always been hard. Just ask anyone who has spent most of their life here and they will tell you.
Recurring floods, tornadoes and periods of drought coupled with major losses of industries over the last four decades have not helped.
Caring for all creatures, great and small
HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – A tiny chestnut brown Chihuahua mix slowly opened its eyes and let out a pitiful groan as if to say, “What just happened?”
With a gentle touch and a sweet caress, Army Reserve Spc. Michelle Millien, a veterinarian technician from Manhattan, N.Y., reached down and wrapped the shaking dog in a soft white towel and whispered in its ear, “It will be alright.”
Soon, the dog was fully alert and ready to go home – albeit, a little sore, but ready to go.
Ladybug in morning dew
I stepped outside this a.m. to let the dog out and saw this ladybug covered in dew on the grill cover. It actually felt nice out for a change. BTW, shot with a Nikon P7000 … a great little camera with lots of pro features just not all the weight. Sometimes it’s nice to carry a small camera and not all that gear. Shot with the macro feature, cropped and adjusted in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
U.S. Army Reserve Command Cases Its Colors
In what was personally a sad day for this photojournalist, I was on hand to witness and record history as the U.S. Army Reserve Command cased its colors, symbolically signifying the move of the headquarters from Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga. to Fort Bragg, N.C.
Fayetteville sign maker leaving his mark on new FORSCOM/USARC headquarters
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A few years ago, a local sign maker sat in his truck on what was then a basically blank canvas of dirt at the corner of Knox and Randolph streets on Fort Bragg.
Stand-up! Hook-up! Approach the door! GO!
Got to the house today just in time to catch some airborne action overhead.
I guess it was a good day to jump out of a perfectly good airplane!
God bless those airborne troopers!

Uh…Houston…You have a problem!
Here’s the latest in my series of things that come from beyond our atmosphere.
This time, Houston has a new ‘sheriff’ in town in the form of an illegal alien that didn’t come from south of the border.
Image of the Houston skyline taken in Jan. 2009. Cloud composites taken over the past few years. The spacecraft created completely in Photoshop.
Enjoy!
