Uh...Houston...You have a problem!

Uh…Houston…You have a problem!

Here’s the latest in my series of things that come from beyond our atmosphere.

This time, Houston has a new ‘sheriff’ in town in the form of an illegal alien that didn’t come from south of the border.

Image of the Houston skyline taken in Jan. 2009. Cloud composites taken over the past few years. The spacecraft created completely in Photoshop.

Enjoy!

Atlanta asteroid attack

Atlanta asteroid attack

O.K., relax! There really wasn’t an asteroid strike in Atlanta today.

That said, this is an image I took of downtown near the 17th Street bridge last month. A little Photoshop magic and there you have it. Atlanta burns up…again! Why do think they call it ‘Hotlanta’?

This graphic inspired by an online PS tutorial and a recent show on the Discovery, TLC or one of those channels.

Egypt in Crisis

Egypt in Crisis

While watching the news last night, I became inspired to create a graphic for the ongoing situation in Egypt. A graphic designer is often influenced to create images based on world events. It’s what we do.

My first venture into deep space

My first venture into deep space

O.K. You got me. I really haven’t been into deep space. Although have been accused from time to time of being a little spaced out.

After looking online at a website devoted to Photoshop artwork, http://www.psdvault.com, I decided to try my hand at some original space-themed artwork.

While all of the examples on the above mentioned site are absolutely fantastic, I decided to give it a try.

So, without further delay, here’s my first stab at space artwork. The nice thing about this type of art is there really is no wrong way to go about it. It really does come from whatever is in your head at the time.

I realize I have a long way to go so your feedback is highly encouraged.

Journalism workshop helps Army Reserve teens cope with military life

Journalism workshop helps Army Reserve teens cope with military life

ATLANTA – As long as there has been an American military, there have always been Families who often incur the rigors of military life when a loved one leaves for a deployment.

For many of these Families, the strain can be unbearable especially today when deployments come up so frequently.

One group of professional journalists and volunteers are hoping that a relatively new program can help the children of military service men and women find an outlet to deal with the emotional stress of military life.

Snowy Sweetwater Creek

Snowy Sweetwater Creek

My wife and I headed out to Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs to see how much snow they got during the epic storm that hit last week.

While much of the snow had melted there was still plenty on the ground in ice along the creek.

White Monday...

White Monday…

Well, just a few short days after a white Christmas, Douglasville and the rest of north Georgia was hit again with snow … this time … A LOT of snow!

Reports of 5-7 inches in some places around the Metro.

Here’s a look out my front door this a.m. State officials want to keep everyone off the roads. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Train derails in downtown Douglasville, Ga.

Train derails in downtown Douglasville, Ga.

Douglasville, Georgia, U.S. – A Norfolk-Southern train derailed around 1 a.m. on Tuesday in downtown, Douglasville, Ga. According to Douglas County PIO Wes Tallon, the train, heading west from Atlanta, encountered an unknown problem causing approximately 11 cars to derail, spilling container cars along the track. No injuries were reported nor were any hazardous chemicals reported as spilled. He said clean-up is expected to take 12-14 hours today. The rail line is a main east-west line from Atlanta to Alabama and services up to 44 trains each day to include AMTRAK. Tallon said the wreckage is contained in a small gulch along Ga. Hwy. 78. No rail cars entered the roadway or the property nearby which included private homes and downtown businesses.

2010 Through the Lens of an Army Reserve Photojournalist

2010 Through the Lens of an Army Reserve Photojournalist

A look back at the year in pictures through the lens of a HQ USARC photojournalist.

It’s amazing nearly 20 photo assignments over 12 months can be condensed into such a short span of time.

Iron Pouring-Elliott Street Pub, Atlanta

Iron Pouring-Elliott Street Pub, Atlanta

I was watching something the other night on television that reminded me of a photo shoot I did a couple of years ago in downtown Atlanta.

It was an iron pouring next to the Elliott Street Pub – a neat place within easy walking distance of the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena and all the other touristy places downtown.

Anyway, this talented group of iron artists worked their magic with the molten iron. It was even an interactive event where for a few bucks, patrons could make their own molds and have the liquid iron poured in to make your own personal keepsake. Their big finale’ is usually a pour into a block of ice…the best fireworks show you could possibly imagine!

First Richmond Times-Dispatch freelance assignment…2005

“There are some cocker spaniel owners having a meet-and-greet tomorrow at a Pocahontas State Park.”

Well, I went there the next day. It was HOT! I was miserable and I’m sure the dogs felt worse. But, I made the pics, the reporter was great and it made the Sunday paper. And….I got PAID and it led to some other freelance assignments over the next couple of years.

Here’s my take that I sent in.

Spec advertisements

Spec advertisements

Attached are a couple of spec advertisements I designed using some racing images I shot a few years ago.

Too bad I never showed them to the people or companies actually pictured in the ads. They might have actually liked them.

Warrior-Citizen Magazine promotional multi-media slideshow

Warrior-Citizen Magazine promotional multi-media slideshow

Here’s a multi-media piece I produced for the Army Reserve Warrior-Citizen magazine that was used during a workshop at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar Dec. 3, 2010.

The 48-page full color magazine is published four times a year.

And the winner is ...

And the winner is …

I attended the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar this weekend (Dec 2-4) along with some of my fellow Army Reserve Civilians and Public Affairs Soldiers.

In addition, I entered the photojournalism contest for the first time. While many of my entries didn’t make the first cut (feature picture story and sports picture story), two of my five military photographs made it to the final with one selected as the winner.

Here is a full-page promotional advertisement for the U.S. Army Reserve that I designed at work.

Nothing fancy, just an image of Army Reserve Soldier Spc. Joshua McDowell and a little work in Photoshop.

Stone Mountain Covered Bridge

Stone Mountain Covered Bridge

Made a trip over to the east side of the Perimeter to Stone Mountain Park today.

I’ve been there probably three or four times before and never realized there was a covered bridge there. Doh!

Anyway, I found it today and here it is in HDR.

Atlanta Midtown in High Dynamic Range

Atlanta Midtown in High Dynamic Range

While downtown last weekend before the sun came up, it appeared there would be a good chance to experiment once again with HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography.

So, five exposures blended into one resulted in this.

Early morning Atlanta

Early morning Atlanta

One of the most picturesque skylines in the south has to be that of Atlanta.

While I will not miss the traffic, I will most definitely miss the scenery.

Photographed looking southeast near the I-75/I-85 split.

Checkmate - the King & Queen buildings

Checkmate – the King & Queen buildings

Locally known as the “King and Queen” buildings, these landmarks of the North Atlanta skyline have architectural crowns on the top of their buildings resembling those found on chess pieces. The architectural pair are formally known as the Concourse Corporate Center off Hammond Drive in the Perimeter area of Dunwoody/Sandy Springs near GA 400 and I-285 north of downtown Atlanta.

Fall colors at Lake Lanier

Fall colors at Lake Lanier

Took a little drive about an hour from home up to Lake Lanier today.

The fall colors are pretty much at or near peak so it was a great day to view the leaves against the clear blue sky.

You can also go across and down the hill to the down river side of the Buford Dam off Buford Dam road. There is a nice walking trail on the east side of the Chattahoochee River.

Oh, FYI. The last image in the gallery (the child’s slide and tire swing) is my first attempt at HDR (high dynamic range) photography.

Bella ... no, not THAT Bella

Bella … no, not THAT Bella

The naming of our last edition to our menagerie of pets had nothing to do with the female of the same name from that movie which deals with the undead living in the American northwest.
