2011 Army Reserve Civilian Journalist of the Year
I am thrilled and honored to announce that I was named the 2011 U.S. Army Reserve Civilian Journalist of the Year, Jan. 27. This is a writing competition but I included the magazine spreads so you can see the images that went with each article.
My packet now moves on to the Army-wide journalism competition for judging in March. Wish me luck!
Night Fire photo featured in Soldiers Magazine
The growing popularity of the night fire image taken at the range during the 2010 Best Warrior Competition at Fort Lee has gotten even bigger play.
The January 2011 issue of Soldiers Magazine featured the image as a background on pages 6 and 7.
Pretty cool!
Warrior-Citizen magazine spreads
Here are some of the Warrior-Citizen magazine spreads that my photographs and stories have appeared in since April 2008 (my first issue that I worked on).
Nothing special, just trying to show a little variety. I’ll add more pages as issues become available.
(NOTE: The opening spreads on the Army Reserve Best Warrior was a collaborative effort between myself and the following Army Reserve Public Affairs Soliders. Sgt. 1st Class Ron Burke, Staff Sgt. Mark Burrell, Sgt. Josh Risner, Pfc. Erica Montano)
Warrior-Citizen Magazine Covers
Here are some of the magazine cover images that I have produced at my full-time job for the Warrior Citizen over the past three years.
The Warrior-Citizen is the official magazine of the U.S. Army Reserve. It is produced four times a year and is a full-color 48-page glossy product highlighting the fantastic work America’s Citizen-Soldiers are doing at home and around the world.
I will continue to add to this gallery as I produce more cover images. My next cover will be the Winter 2011 issue.

2009 Dept. of Defense Thomas Jefferson award
In my daytime job as a civilian photojournalist for the Army Reserve, it was truly an honor to be recognized with the 2009 Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson award for photojournalism at a ceremony in May 2010. The irony is, I wasn’t even there to receive the award as I was on assignment at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif. My supervisor received the award on my behalf.
To be recognized by your peers and placed into the ranks of the previous Thomas Jefferson winners is very humbling.
Rivals.com 2005-2006 College Recruiting Yearbook
This was my first big publishing assignment outside of the newspaper industry in Oct. 2005. It was a cover shoot and inside spread of Percy Harvin, a high school football player who went on to play for the University of Florida and was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings a couple of years ago. It was [...]
Wounded Warriors Honored by Alice In Chains
ATLANTA – Members of the rock band Alice In Chains have a blistering tour schedule running 11 months a year. But that schedule opens the door for an opportunity – to visit injured service men and women around the country.
This was a great feature to visit with the all the band members and about 15 Wounded Warriors from Army posts across the state of Georgia.
Army Reserve support to Haiti earthquake relief
The 196th Transportation Company responded to support Haiti earthquake relief efforts as part of Operation Unified Response, Jan. 24-25, 2010. The unit moved 300,000 lbs. of food, water and comfort items from Fort Pierce, Fla. to Opa-locka, Fla.
Liberating Buchenwald
In April of 2009, my boss, our video producer and myself had the honor of interviewing a World War II veteran who participated in the Liberation of Buchenwald.
Virgil Myers, then a member of the 80th Division, recalled his time in Europe from landing on the beaches of France shortly after D-Day to his time in Austria.
We spent a mere two and a half hours with Mr. Myers and could have easily spent all day with him. Even after all these years, his memory was still tack sharp.
To read an excerpt from the story and read the entire transcript of his interview, visit the Army Reserve website.
- The layout was honored with second place for Art/Graphics in Support of a Publication and third place in Feature Writing in the 2009 Department of the Army Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Journalism Competition –
