2012 U.S. Olympic Trials - Table Tennis

2012 U.S. Olympic Trials – Table Tennis

CARY, N.C. – I photographed the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials – Table Tennis Feb. 12, 2012 for ZUMA Press.

I must admit I was somewhat surprised the event would even be held there, but, after speaking with organizers, it all came together.

As a matter of fact, the North American qualifier between the U.S. and Canada will be held in Cary in April.

But was even more surprising was the speed of play. These men and women really can hammer a table tennis ball at remarkable speeds.

Army-Navy 2011

The 112th Army-Navy game happened for the first time in the Washington, D.C. area Saturday, Dec. 10 at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

While the Navy Midshipmen won their 10th straight game against the Army Black Knights, the final score of 27-21 was one of the closest in recent memory.

In Memoriam: Dan Wheldon, 1987-2011

Below are a few images I found in my archives of Dan Wheldon. They were taken from 2004-2007 at Richmond International Raceway when they used to run the Indy Racing League’s SunTrust Indy Challenge.

Rest in peace Dan.

2011 Eastern Zone Polocrosse Championships

2011 Eastern Zone Polocrosse Championships

On the field action from the 2011 Eastern Zone Championship of the American Polocrosse Association at Pinehurst, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011. Polocrosse, founded in Australia in the mid-1940′s, is a combination of polo and lacrosse. Twenty-eight teams and 126 players from Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee competed at this year’s championship event.

This is the first time I’ve ever covered an event like this. A great combination of polo and lacrosse. It was a fun event to cover and definitely included family members competing together.

Chapel Hill Sports Report showcase 2008-2010

It was a pleasure to spend the last three years as a volunteer photographer for the Chapel Hill High School Panthers football program in Douglasville, Ga.

A team, that until 2008, had never seen a winning season in its seven year history, brought in a new coaching staff that really turned things around.

The 2008 season was the first winning season for the Panthers which also resulted in their first GHSA State Class AAAAA play-off appearance. They made it to the second round.

In 2009, the Panthers again made it to the state play-offs only to fall in the first round.

This year, in a new classification and a large graduation class put the skids on a third consecutive play-off season. That said, the team finished a respectable 4-2 in their sub-region.

Here is a short multi-media slideshow from their past three seasons.

Good hands!

Good hands!

I have been covering a local high school for the past three years as their volunteer photographer/blogger. The Chapel Hill Panthers have made it to the GHSA play-offs the last two years. This year has been a little difficult in comparison and they still have a long way to go.

But this past Friday, senior quarterback D’Shawn Abercrombie showed that he has great presence and hands to match. While scrambling for the end zone, he briefly lost control of the ball. But, as you can see in the photos, he managed to ‘keep his eye on the ball’.

By the way, they won 28-7 for their first victory of the year.

Army Reserve & NASCAR team up

Army Reserve & NASCAR team up

I had the honor of covering the Army Reserve featured as primary sponsor of the #39 Stewart-Haas Chevrolet Impala driven by Ryan Newman during the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The race was held on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010.

While Newman qualified on the outside of Row 1, he finished 8th overall. But that was a huge accomplishment as he battled an ill-handling car for most of the middle part of the 500 mile event.

AMA Supercross, Atlanta 2009

AMA Supercross, Atlanta 2009

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross came to the Georgia Dome in Feb. 2009.

It had been many years since I shot any motocross events…really not since Ricky Carmichael was still a successful amateur when he was tearing up the courses.

Anyway, it took me a few frames to get back in the swing of things but once I found my rhythm, it was just like riding a bicycle, er, motorcycle.

Here’s my take for ZUMA Press.

Olympic Weightlifting Trials_2008

I photographed the 2008 U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Trials on the campus of Georgia Tech.

It ranks up there as definitely one of the different sports photo shoots I’ve been on.

What was amazing was the women who basically lifting weight equal to or greater than the weight of a refrigerator over their heads! Incredible!

Helio, Danica thrill Richmond crowd

Helio, Danica thrill Richmond crowd

I thought NASCAR was fast until I saw the Indy Racing League cars blister Richmond International Raceway in the summer of 2005. They were just flat out fast. Helio Castroneves won the pole in record time and went on to win the race that year. It was also Danica Patrick’s rookie year in IRL. Yes, [...]

NASCAR & IRL at RIR

My first year of shooting at Richmond International Raceway was 2004. I shot the spring NASCAR and summer IRL races.

Oh, by the way, they were both shot on film on a Nikon F100 body.

Here’s a few of the better ones.
